You believe it or not – A 2004 article suggested that there are almost 20 million migraine attacks happening every day.
Millions of Men Have Benefited!”

What is a migraine headache?

During the last year alone, nearly 80 of men and 95 of women have had at least one headache. While most headache sufferers resort to man-made drugs and pain

relievers to treat their symptoms, many are now turning to natural headache remedies to provide a safe but effective solution for their headaches.
There are two general types of headache: primary and secondary. Primary headaches include tension, migraine, and cluster headaches, which are not caused by any underlying medical condition. Nearly 90 of all headaches that occur are primary. Unlike primary headaches, secondary headaches are caused by medical conditions, such as infection or increased pressure in the skull due to a growing tumor. These account for a very small percentage of all headaches.

A migraine headache is a form of vascular headache. Migraine headache is caused by vasodilatation (enlargement of blood vessels) that causes the release of chemicals from nerve fibers that coil around the large arteries of the brain. Enlargement of these blood vessels stretches the nerves that coil around them and causes the nerves to release chemicals. The chemicals cause inflammation, pain, and further enlargement of the artery. The increasing enlargement of the arteries magnifies the pain.
Migraine attacks commonly activate the sympathetic nervous system in the body. The sympathetic nervous system is often thought of as the part of the nervous system that controls primitive responses to stress and pain, the so-called “fight or flight” response, and this activation causes many of the symptoms associated with migraine attacks; for example, the increased sympathetic nervous activity in the intestine causes nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Sympathetic activity also delays emptying of the stomach into the small intestine and thereby prevents oral medications from entering the intestine and being absorbed.
The impaired absorption of oral medications is a common reason for the ineffectiveness of medications taken to treat migraine headaches.
The increased sympathetic activity also decreases the circulation of blood, and this leads to pallor of the skin as well as cold hands and feet.
The increased sympathetic activity also contributes to the sensitivity to light and sound sensitivity as well as blurred vision.
Migraine afflicts 28 million Americans, with females suffering more frequently (17%) than males (6%). Missed work and lost productivity from migraine create a significant public burden. Nevertheless, migraine still remains largely underdiagnosed and under-treated. Less than half of individuals with migraine are diagnosed by their doctors.
Migraine Headaches are paroxysmal ailments, that are accompanied by a severe headache. The headache normally occurs on one side of the head. Migraine is associated with disorders of digestion, liver, and sight. Migraine headaches occur sometimes due to great mental tension and stress. Migraine headache patients are typically smart, inflexible, disciplined. Sudden migraine attacks may occur due to overworked muscles in the head and neck and due to continuous stress. The blood flow drops because these tight muscles squeeze the arteries. When the person suddenly relaxes these tight muscles expand and stretch the blood vessel walls. The blood pumped with each heartbeat then pushes the vessels further causing immense pain. More information on regular headaches.

SYMPTOMS

Pain on one side of the head

Migraine headaches have a certain pattern: Normally, the pain is on only one side of the head and often starts from behind the eye. The migraine attack is concentrated on the left side on once occasion and on another you have a headache on the right side.

A short period of depression, irritability and loss of appetite

Migraines and depression are sometimes related in some persons. The affected person may have a period of depression prior to a migraine attack. Migraine headaches also are sometimes preceded loss of appetite and irritability. Migraine attacks may occur every day in some people or may occur with a weeks gap or a month or may be over a year. There is no predictable migraine attack cycle that has been established yet.

Pounding pain, nausea, and vomiting

Symptoms of migraines include pounding pain, nausea and vomiting. You can feel the blood pulsating through the affected side of the head.

Numbness or weakness in an arm or leg, or on one side of the face.

Migraine pain may be preceded by numbness and weakness or an arm or a leg. The eye may start paining or one side of the face gets numb prior to a migraine headache. In some cases the entire face and tongue may get numb making the speech slurry. Digestive problems are experienced sometimes as the headache develops.

Common Migraine (without aura) symptoms

rritability, laziness, stiff neck, yawning are signs of common migraine (migraine without aura). Confused thinking, weakness, difficulty in concentrating are some other signs.

Classical Migraine with aura symptoms

Migraines with aura may have all the symptoms of those without the aura. But has one additional symptom: a visual C shaped aura. A C shaped arc of flashing lights with the center as gray or blind and the colored lights at the end of the C. This migraine aura starts as a small dot and expands in about 30 minutes.

CAUSES

The basic cause of Migraines is still unknown. Although genetics may play a role, with 50 to 70% of Migraine sufferers reporting a familial occurrence, no consistent biochemical or physiological characteristic can be recognized in the relatives of those afflicted with the condition.

There are several theories as to what causes a Migraine and what happens to us when they occur. One of these theories suggests that certain arteries in our brain contract and cause a reduction in blood flow to the visual area of our brain. It is suggested that this reduction of blood flow results in the visual and other symptoms that accompany a Migraine.

This theory further suggests that the pain that often follows these symptoms was the result of dilation (expansion) of the carotid artery and pressure on the nerves in the artery wall.

Yet another theory proposes that nerve cells in the brain begin to lose function which causes a reduction blood flow, which reduces levels of magnesium, which in turn adds to decreasing nerve cell function and that this dysfunction spreads in a wave-like fashion to all effected areas.

Many researchers feel that serotonin, an important brain chemical, may fuel Migraines.
Platelets (components of our blood) contain all of the serotonin normally present in blood, and, after they clump together, serotonin is released resulting in a potent constricting effect on the arteries.

Low blood sugar, allergy infection, excessive intake of certain drugs

igraine headaches maybe caused by low blood sugar, allergy infection, excessive intake of certain drugs, nutritional deficiency, consistent overwork, improper sleep and rest, excessive smoking, drinking, and sexual indulgence.

Menstrual Migraine: Menstruation in women

Menstruation in women is also one of the important cause of migraine headache. Commonly known as menstrual migraine, this usually abates after menopause.

Migraine Facts You Need To Know

The Migraine has been a well known medical problem for over 5,000 years and
represents one of the most investigated types of head pain.

Research performed on large groups of people has shown that in the U.S., 18% of women and 6% of men suffer from Migraines. This means approximately 18 million females and 5.6 million males over the age of 12 suffer from Migraines. According to the
Center for Disease Control, incidences of Migraines have increased 60% from 1981 to
1989 and costs associated with the treatment and research of Migraines are estimated
at 18 billion dollars per year

Know what you’re up against

– not all Migraines are the same! Read on to learn which Migraine symptoms you suffer from and how to alleviate them once and for all!

Migraine Symptoms
The two most important categories are Migraine without aura (common Migraine) and Migraine with aura (classic Migraine).

Auras represent several forms of visual disturbances that are described as dark or black point(s) that may or may not expand and obscure the patient’s vision. The black spot may be surrounded by lights with zigzag lines.

Patients with classic Migraine symptoms may exhibit stroke-like symptoms including symptoms affecting one hand, arm, or side of the face.

A diagnosis of Migraines without aura is made if the patient fulfills specific criteria. The
patient must have a history of five previous similar episodes, with pain lasting between 4
and 72 hours. Additionally, they must meet two of the following four characteristic symptoms:

Unilateral head pain
Pain must be throbbing or pulsing
An experience of moderate to severe pain which Inhibit or restricts the ability to function
Pain is made worse by routine physical activity.
Furthermore, they must have one of the following two symptoms present:

Nausea and/or vomiting
Adverse reactions to light or sound.
In contrast, Migraine with aura employs the same diagnostic criteria as common

Migraine with the following exceptions Patients only need a history of two prior Migraine attacks and must fulfill three of the following four criteria:

One or more aura symptoms
Aura symptoms that develop over more than 4 Minutes
Aura lasts less than 60 seconds
Headache follows within 60 minutes of the aura ending.
It’s interesting to note that Migraine sufferers are more likely to experience specific
types of Headache pain including intense throbbing head pain, brought on by exertion;
ice-pick-like pains or electrical jabs or “stabbing Headaches”; and unilateral, intense
eye pain
